Commercial elevators are elevators that are used for lifting people in office building, multifamily house building, a library building etc. to avoid climbing up stairs.

There are different types of commercial elevators

In ground: These types of elevators are used for decades and they are the traditional ones. They make use of a hydraulic jack of a single stage which is installed in the ground. The jack is attached under the car towards the center of the platform.

Twin jack roped hydro: These are the elevators that use wire ropes in combination with two hydraulic jacks to lift the car. It works in 2:1 ratio with every time the jack rises one foot the car also rises two feet.

Cantilever roped hydraulic: These elevators have a hole less design restricted to low capacity applications.

Traction: These elevators use geared machine as also ropes and counterweights in place of hydraulic equipment. The car has rails mounted on each side and on any one side counterweight rails are also located.

The geared machine with drive equipment is located in a machine room above the hoistway. Some of the elevators have it along the hoistway with a lower landing. This is known as basement traction.

People who are old and cannot climb up or come down the staircase are the ones who are mostly benefitted by the elevators. Also the ones physically challenged get the benefit of not having used the stairs. People who have had a knee surgery or have weak legs get the privilege too.
